Overview

Shoulder conditions are among the most common musculoskeletal presentations seen in a primary care providers’ office. In 2013 it was reported that there were 11 million visits for shoulder injury and 80% of people with shoulder pain were treated in the general practice setting first. Medical knowledge is continuing to evolve as evidence based practice guidelines are refined and intensively scrutinized. Common shoulder disorders often exhibit similar clinical features which may create some clinical confusion for primary care providers. Poor consensus exists surrounding the classification and naming of many shoulder conditions, compounded by evidence indicating that clinical examination and investigations may have limited utility.  However, providing practical training to general practitioners about shoulder problems has significant benefit and cost effectiveness.  A thorough understanding of the shoulder anatomy, combined with improved clinical judgment, are essential when formulating a diagnosis and management plan for the patient with an injured shoulder. “The Shoulder 2016: An Evidence Based Update” is designed to provide primary care providers with a comprehensive understanding of shoulder injury management.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for primary care physicians, physician assistants, physical therapists, athletic trainers and other allied healthcare professionals involved in or have an interest in shoulder injuries.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this program, learners should be able to:

  • Review the basic anatomy of the shoulder.
  • Recognize common risk factors of shoulder injury.
  • Describe the fundamentals of a comprehensive physical examination of the shoulder.
  • Define common injury mechanisms of shoulder injury.
  • Summarize conservative and operative treatment options for patients and athletes with common shoulder injuries.
  • Describe considerations for the use of injectable medications including biologics based on shoulder pathology.
  • List the goals, criteria and benchmarks for shoulder rehabilitation and progression.
  • Summarize conservative and operative treatment options for clavicle fractures.
  • Recognize a clinical indicator via evaluation for determining when patients could benefit from a shoulder arthroplasty.
  • Formulate preventative strategies for patients who wish to reduce shoulder injury.
