Femur, Tibia, and Fibula Fractures

These fractures are breaks to the bones of the leg. These injuries can involve the knee joint or the soft tissue surrounding the bones, which makes it critically important that an orthopedic specialist evaluate the leg for all of the injuries that can result from a traumatic fracture.

Symptoms

  • Pain when the leg supports any weight
  • A tense feeling around the knee that limits the ability to bend
  • A visible deformity
  • A pale or cool foot that indicates that blood flow might be impaired
  • Numbness around the foot

Treatment

  • Casting
  • External fixatures to stabilize the leg
  • Surgery using rods, plates, or screws to stabilize the fracture
